Dash Cam Night Vision Shootout: Seeing Clearly After Dark

Insurance data consistently shows a disproportionate share of fleet incidents occur in low light — yet most dash cam marketing shows daylight footage. We built a controlled test to measure real night performance.
The Test Setup
Seven fleet dash cams were mounted in a test vehicle and run through identical routes: a controlled 5-lux lux-stage, an unlit rural road, and an urban core with mixed sodium-vapor and LED street lighting. We scored plate legibility at 20 meters and facial detail at 5 meters.
Sensor Size Beats Megapixels
The strongest night performers weren't the highest-megapixel units — they were the ones with the largest sensor pixels. A 2MP cam with a 1/1.8-inch sensor outresolved an 8MP cam with a 1/4-inch sensor in low light. Marketing megapixel counts mislead buyers.
Infrared Illuminators: Mixed Results
Built-in IR LEDs helped at short range for in-cabin DSM, but forward-facing IR created reflection flare through windshields. The best forward units used large-aperture lenses with starlight sensors instead of active IR.
HDR Performance
Oncoming headlights remained the hardest challenge. Only three units held detail in both shadow and highlight regions. Single-exposure units washed out completely when meeting high-beam traffic.
