Verdict

H.266 is technically ready and the storage savings are real, but thermal and licensing friction will keep H.265 as the MDVR default through at least 2027. Spec H.266 readiness as a future-proofing checkbox, not a deployment requirement.

H.266 (VVC) promises another 30–40% bitrate reduction over H.265. For MDVR fleets where storage is a major TCO line item, that's a meaningful number. We encoded identical footage with both codecs and measured the real trade-offs.

The Storage Math

On our standardized 8-channel test footage — 1080p, 30fps, mixed urban/highway — H.265 averaged 2.1 Mbps per channel. H.266 averaged 1.35 Mbps. Over a 7-day retention window, that's roughly 380GB saved per vehicle per month at parity quality.

Quality at Low Bitrate

At aggressive low-bitrate settings, H.266 visibly outperformed H.265 on texture retention — particularly license plate edges and fine text. The gap widened as bitrate dropped.

The Compute Catch

H.266 encode is meaningfully heavier. Our test MDVR's encoding SoC ran 18°C hotter and drew 1.3W more under H.266 vs H.265. For fanless automotive enclosures, that thermal headroom matters — some units will need hardware redesigns.

Licensing & Patent Pool

H.266 carries a more fragmented patent pool than H.265, with royalty terms still settling. Vendor legal teams we spoke with flagged this as a 12–18 month risk before adoption scales.
