Where 5G Actually Helps

The clearest win isn't live video — it's OTA updates. 5G units pulled 800MB firmware packages in under two minutes on good coverage, vs. 20+ minutes on 4G fallback. For fleets running 500+ vehicles, that's a meaningful operational difference.

Live Streaming Reality Check

Live 4K streaming remained inconsistent outside urban corridors. Even with H.265 sub-streams, throughput dropped below 4 Mbps on roughly 30% of our route — enough to degrade preview to SD. The honest answer: 5G doesn't yet replace local storage for evidence.

Latency for AI Handoff

Where 5G genuinely shone was AI-assisted queries — pulling a clip for cloud-based license plate recognition returned in 1.2 seconds, versus 4.5 seconds on 4G. For investigative workflows, that matters.

The Premium Question

5G modems still command a 20–30% price premium, plus higher data plan costs. For most fleets, a 4G unit with edge AI will deliver 90% of the value at 70% of the cost — at least through 2026.

Verdict

5G is real but not yet transformative for MDVR. Spec it for fleets where OTA update velocity and investigative latency justify the premium; otherwise 4G remains the pragmatic default.
